An Anglo Saxon settlement followed the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, even though by1189 being called by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the occupants of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the ringleaders were accordingly executed in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into an important industrial town during the 19th century, manufacturing such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industry led to its being a target of bombing during WW2, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The train found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.
