Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, around thirty two miles from central London. The town boasts a population of roughly 111,000 people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD, and the settlement that expanded surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment came after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though by1189 it had become known by its current title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the people of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the instigators were consequently executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent witnessed lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Through the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to an important industrial town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in World War 2, and it was successfully struck many times.

The train found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which allowed craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, because a good deal of its industry went bust, though it still is a flourishing and developing town today, primarily due to the proximity to the city of london, and the terrific road and rail communications.
