Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fort in about the 1st century AD, and the commune which grew up round the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon encampment followed the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was described as Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it had become known by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the inhabitants of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the main agitators were thereafter executed in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C witnessed even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th century, manufacturing goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in WWII, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway line found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline in the 1980's, since a high percentage of its plants closed, though it still is a thriving and growing town today, predominantly due to the closeness to the capital, and its good rail and road communications.

The town lies near the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is around 26 kilometres drive from Colchester and about 51 kilometres from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
