Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has a populace of around one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD, and the commune which grew up in the locality of the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment succeeded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it had taken on its present title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the residents of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the leading agitators were ultimately put to death in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century witnessed even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to a major industrial town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The railway line arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a high percentage of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it is still a flourishing and booming town today, primarily due to its nearness to the city of london, plus the terrific road and rail links.

Chelmsford lies near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately 16 miles drive from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
