The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, a car journey of around thirty two mls from the heart of London. The town has a population of around 111,500 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in about AD 60, and the commune which grew up in the locality of the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement succeeded the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recorded as Celmeresfort, however by1189 being called by its current name of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the residents of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the main culprits were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a significant industrial town during the 19th century, producing items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was struck a number of times.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a period of decline during the 1980's, when a lot of its industry closed, even so it is still a successful and booming town today, primarily because of its nearness to the city of london, plus its excellent rail and road connections.

The town lies close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's roughly 26 km drive from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
