Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford has got a population of about one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD, and the village that evolved around the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement succeeded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however by1189 it had become known by its present name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the citizens of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the main instigators were later hung in the town after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th C saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged many alleged witches.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a significant manufacturing town during the 19th century, making products such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was hit on several occasions.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about forty five years earlier (1797), when it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a good deal of its manufacturing plants went bust, even so it still is a flourishing and developing town today, largely because of its close proximity to the capital, and the first rate road and rail links.

The town lies just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's about 26 km drive from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
