Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands on the Can and Chelmer rivers, a driving distance of roughly 32 miles from the heart of London. The town boasts a populace of roughly 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is an age-old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in about AD 60, and the encampment which grew up around the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement followed the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it had taken on its present name of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the locals of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the leading instigators were thereafter hung in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C witnessed more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th century, making goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about forty five years before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a good deal of its production facilities went bust, even so it still is a flourishing and expanding town today, mostly due to the close proximity to London, plus the outstanding rail and road links.
