The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, roughly thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford has got a population of roughly 111,000 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later the site of a Roman fortification in around the 1st century AD, and the community that grew up surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement superseded the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it was being referred to by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the residents of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the main agitators were accordingly put to death in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless supposed witches.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into an important industrial town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing items such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was successfully struck several times.

The railway line found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years earlier (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through serious decline in the nineteen-eighties, because much of its industry went bust, even so it still is a successful and blooming town today, largely due to its close proximity to London, and its terrific rail and road communications.

The town is found near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly 16 mls car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
