The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, about 32 miles from the centre of London. The town has a population of roughly 110,000 occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD, and the village that developed surrounding the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment came after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, though by1189 being called by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the residents of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the ringleaders were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent witnessed many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless alleged witches.

Across the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to a major industrial town in the nineteenth century, producing such products as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was hit several times.

The train found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately 45 years before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling vessels to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline during the 1980's, because much of its factories ceased to be profitable, though it remains a successful and blooming town today, largely because of its close proximity to the city of london, plus the terrific rail and road communications.

The town is set close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly twenty six km car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometres from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
