The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found on the rivers Can and Chelmer, a driving distance of roughly 32 miles from the city of London. The town boasts a population of some 111,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the town that evolved round the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it had taken on its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the people of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the ringleaders were thereafter hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death many supposed witches.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to a major manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, making such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industry led to its being a target of bombing during WW2, and it was hit on several occasions.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through considerable decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a lot of its manufacturers closed down, yet it is still a successful and developing town today, predominantly due to its proximity to the city of london, plus the first class rail and road communications.

Chelmsford is located adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately sixteen miles car journey from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of the capital.
