Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two mls from central London. The town has got a population of some 111,500 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD, and the commune which grew up round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon camp succeeded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 being called by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the inhabitants of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the instigators were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent witnessed yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial industrial town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing such products as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing during the Second World War, and it was struck quite a few times.

The train came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a good deal of its factories shut down, though it remains a successful and expanding town today, mostly because of its closeness to the capital, and the first rate rail and road communications.

Chelmsford can be found beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's about twenty six km from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
