The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, approximately 32 miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a population of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand residents, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in roughly 60 AD, and the settlement that evolved round the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was listed as Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it had become known by its present title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the locals of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the leading agitators were later put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th Cent witnessed yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed countless alleged witches.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed into a major industrial town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing such goods as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in World War 2, and it was hit quite a few times.

The railway line found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about 45 yrs before (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through some decline in the 1980's, because a high percentage of its industry went bust, though it still is a successful and developing town today, predominantly due to the close proximity to London, plus its outstanding road and rail communications.
