River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the commune that grew up around the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment succeeded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless 100 years later it had become known by its present name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the inhabitants of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading culprits were ultimately executed in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a serious industrial town during the 19th century, producing products such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing during WW2, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly 45 years before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a period of decline during the 1980's, since much of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it remains a successful and blooming town today, for the most part due to the closeness to the capital, and the terrific road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is found close to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's about twenty six kilometers car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometres from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
