The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands on the Chelmer and Can rivers, a car journey of around thirty two mls from the heart of London. The town has got a population of around one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in roughly 60 AD, and the commune that evolved surrounding the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon settlement came after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, nevertheless 100 years later it had become known by its present name of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the locals of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the agitators were ultimately put to death in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed in to a major manufacturing town during the 19th century, manufacturing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was hit a few times.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a high percentage of its industry closed down, although it continues to be a thriving and booming town today, predominantly due to the close proximity to the city of london, plus the first rate rail and road communications.

The town stands close to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly sixteen miles driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
