Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford has a population of roughly 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD, and the town that grew up round the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community succeeded the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it had taken on its modern name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the citizens of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the main agitators were thereafter put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century witnessed even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed countless presumed witches.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into a considerable industrial town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing such goods as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was successfully hit a few times.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into considerable decline in the nineteen-eighties, because a lot of its industrial facilities ceased to be profitable, even so it remains a flourishing and growing town today, predominantly due to its closeness to the city of london, and the exceptional rail and road connections.
