The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from the city of London. The town has a population of approximately 110,000 occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in around the 1st century AD, and the encampment that grew up around the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement came after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it was being referred to by its present name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the leading agitators were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed numerous assumed witches.

For several generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a major manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, producing such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was hit several times.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which allowed watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline during the 1980's, as a high percentage of its industry went bust, even so it still is a successful and expanding town today, predominantly due to the proximity to the capital, plus its superb road and rail communications.

The town is found adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's some sixteen mls from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
