Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands on the Chelmer and Can rivers, a driving distance of roughly thirty two miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has a population of approximately 110,000 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD, and the encampment that grew up in the vicinity of the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment followed after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 being called by its modern title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the inhabitants of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the main instigators were consequently executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C witnessed even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death countless alleged witches.

Across the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into a significant manufacturing town in the 19th century, producing goods such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target for bombing in WWII, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway line arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a high percentage of its manufacturers ceased to be profitable, even so it is still a flourishing and developing town today, for the most part because of its close proximity to the capital, and its outstanding rail and road connections.
