Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the rivers Can and Chelmer, roughly 32 miles from central London. The town has got a population of about 111,000 occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in approximately AD 60, and the town that grew up in the area of the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon community came after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 it was being referred to by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the inhabitants of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the instigators were ultimately put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged countless alleged witches.

Throughout the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into an important manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, producing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing during WW2, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into some decline during the 1980's, when a lot of its industry went bust, even so it still is a flourishing and expanding town today, for the most part due to its close proximity to the capital, and the outstanding rail and road communications.
