Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, a car journey of approximately thirty two miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has got a populace of about 111,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in approximately the first century AD, and the community which evolved around the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community succeeded the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was noted as Celmeresfort, nevertheless one hundred years later it had taken on its modern title of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the residents of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the main culprits were thereafter put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent witnessed yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For many centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a major industrial town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing items such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was hit on several occasions.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into serious decline during the 1980's, when a good deal of its industry shut down, even so it is still a successful and developing town today, largely due to its proximity to the capital, plus its quality road and rail communications.

The town stands near the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's roughly twenty six kilometres from Colchester and about 51 kilometres from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
