The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of some 111,500 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later the location of a Roman fortress in approximately the first century AD, and the commune which evolved in the locality of the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon settlement succeeded the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recognized as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later being called by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the occupants of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the instigators were consequently put to death in the town after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th C saw more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a major industrial town during the 19th C, crafting items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industry resulted in its being a target of bombing during the Second World War, and it was struck a few times.

The train came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about forty five years before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into serious decline during the 1980's, because a high percentage of its industry closed, even so it still is a successful and expanding town today, primarily due to the close proximity to the city of london, plus the first class road and rail links.

Chelmsford is found adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly twenty six km from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
