An Anglo Saxon camp followed after the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, however one hundred years later it had taken on its modern name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the citizens of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the main culprits were later executed in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed many presumed witches.

Over the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed into a considerable industrial town during the 19th century, crafting such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in World War 2, and it was hit on several occasions.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs before (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a good deal of its industry shut down, nonetheless it is still a thriving and developing town today, largely because of its proximity to the city of london, plus its first rate rail and road links.
