An Anglo Saxon camp followed after the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, however one hundred years later it had taken on its modern name of Chelmsford.

During the 14th Cent a number of the citizens of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the main culprits were later executed in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in World War 2, and it was hit on several occasions.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs before (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a good deal of its industry shut down, nonetheless it is still a thriving and developing town today, largely because of its proximity to the city of london, plus its first rate rail and road links.
