Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from the city of London. The town has a population of approximately 111,000 occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is an age-old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

An Anglo Saxon community followed after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was described as Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 being called by its modern name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the locals of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the main culprits were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th Cent saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a significant industrial town during the 19th Cent, crafting such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was hit a number of times.

The railway arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, as a good deal of its industry shut down, though it remains a thriving and booming town today, predominantly due to the closeness to London, and its first class road and rail links.
