River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortification in about the first century AD, and the encampment which grew up round the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless one hundred years later being called by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the occupants of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the main instigators were consequently executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a major manufacturing town during the 19th C, crafting items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was successfully hit a number of times.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around 45 years earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through some decline during the nineteen-eighties, as a good deal of its industry closed, though it remains a flourishing and booming town today, mostly because of its proximity to the city of london, and its outstanding road and rail communications.

The town is set just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately 16 miles drive from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
