Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, around 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a population of approximately 111,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.
