The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, a car journey of some thirty two mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has got a population of approximately 110,000 occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

A Saxon encampment succeeded the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless 100 years later it had taken on its modern title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize.
