The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of around 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in about AD 60, and the encampment that expanded surrounding the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was documented as Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it had become known by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the citizens of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the main instigators were accordingly hung in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th century witnessed lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged many alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th C, manufacturing such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing during WWII, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The train arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through substantial decline during the nineteen-eighties, as a lot of its industry closed down, even so it remains a flourishing and growing town today, primarily due to its closeness to the city of london, and its quality road and rail communications.

The town lies beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is around 26 kilometres driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
