An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it was being referred to by its current name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century a number of the inhabitants of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the ringleaders were accordingly executed in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th century saw more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death countless assumed witches.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned in to a significant manufacturing town during the 19th century, producing products such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was successfully hit many times.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through some decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a good deal of its production facilities ceased to be profitable, though it remains a flourishing and expanding town today, mostly due to the close proximity to the city of london, and the terrific road and rail links.

The town is located beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly sixteen mls car journey from Colchester and about 32 mls from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
