The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two miles from the heart of London. The town has a population of about 111,000 residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is an early town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in about AD 60, and the town that grew up around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement succeeded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, nonetheless 100 years later it was being referred to by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the leading agitators were consequently hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into a major manufacturing town in the 19th C, making such items as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs before (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into a period of decline in the 1980's, as a high percentage of its industry went bust, though it continues to be a thriving and growing town today, largely due to its proximity to the capital, plus its first class road and rail communications.

The town is positioned just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's some 26 kilometers car journey from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
