The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set on the rivers Chelmer and Can, about thirty two mls from central London. The town has a populace of about 111,500 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).
