Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from the heart of London. The town has got a population of roughly 111,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in approximately AD 60, and the commune that developed in the vicinity of the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon settlement followed after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its modern name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the citizens of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the main instigators were later hung in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th century, manufacturing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industry led to its being a target for bombing in WWII, and it was hit quite a few times.

The railway came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling craft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, because a good deal of its industry went bust, even so it is still a thriving and booming town today, largely due to its close proximity to the capital, plus its excellent rail and road connections.

Chelmsford stands near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is some 16 miles drive from Colchester and about 32 mls from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
