Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, a driving distance of roughly thirty two miles from central London. The town has got a populace of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in around AD 60, and the community that grew up round the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon community superseded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although 100 years later being called by its present identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the agitators were ultimately put to death in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th C, producing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was struck a number of times.

The railway line came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years before (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline in the 1980's, because a lot of its industries went bust, even so it continues to be a thriving and blooming town today, mainly because of its proximity to London, plus its outstanding road and rail communications.

The town stands close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is some 26 km driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
