Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned on the rivers Chelmer and Can, a car journey of some 32 mls from central London. The town boasts a population of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD, and the commune that evolved surrounding the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement followed the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it had become known by its current name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the residents of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the instigators were consequently hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th C saw yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged many presumed witches.

Across the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved into a major manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, producing such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during WW2, and it was hit a number of times.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, since much of its industry shut down, even so it is still a successful and growing town today, principally due to its closeness to London, and the terrific rail and road links.

The town stands just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is around 16 miles car journey from Colchester and about 32 mls from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
