Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies on the Can and Chelmer rivers, about 32 miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has got a population of about 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in about the first century AD, and the village which evolved around the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community followed after the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless by1189 it had become known by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the citizens of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the instigators were later executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century saw more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned into a substantial industrial town in the nineteenth century, producing goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into considerable decline during the 1980's, mainly because a good deal of its industry went bust, although it is still a successful and growing town today, principally due to its proximity to the capital, and the terrific road and rail connections.
