The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from the city of London. The town has got a population of some 111,000 residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is an ancient town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later on the site of a Roman fort in around 60 AD, and the settlement which evolved round the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it was being referred to by its current identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the inhabitants of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the leading instigators were thereafter put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th century saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed numerous suspected witches.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into an important manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, producing items such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was struck a number of times.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a lot of its industry shut down, though it remains a successful and developing town today, principally due to the proximity to the city of london, plus its terrific rail and road links.

Chelmsford can be found close to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly 26 kilometres driving distance from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
