Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, about 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has a population of around one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later the site of a Roman fortification in about the first century AD, and the commune which grew up in the locality of the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment succeeded the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it was being referred to by its present title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the people of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the ringleaders were subsequently hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent saw many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed numerous suspected witches.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important industrial town during the 19th C, crafting such items as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five years before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a lot of its manufacturing facilities closed down, though it is still a successful and developing town today, mostly because of its nearness to the city of london, and its exceptional rail and road links.
