Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has a population of some 110,000 residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

A Saxon camp succeeded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recorded as Celmeresfort, nevertheless one hundred years later being called by its modern name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize.
