The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, around thirty two miles from the heart of London. The town has got a population of around 111,000 residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortification in roughly 60 AD, and the commune which grew up surrounding the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon camp followed after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its present title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the people of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the agitators were later hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important industrial town during the 19th century, crafting such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in WWII, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into some decline in the 1980's, because a good deal of its plants went bust, even so it remains a flourishing and expanding town today, for the most part because of its proximity to the city of london, plus its quality rail and road links.

The town stands near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is about 26 km drive from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
