The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from the heart of London. The town has a populace of some 111,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in around the first century AD, and the encampment that grew up in the vicinity of the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed after the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was registered as Celmeresfort, however one hundred years later it had taken on its modern identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the occupants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the main agitators were consequently put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged many presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, crafting such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing in WWII, and it was successfully hit a few times.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into serious decline during the nineteen-eighties, since much of its industry shut down, although it is still a thriving and growing town today, mainly due to the close proximity to the capital, and the excellent road and rail connections.

The town stands near the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's roughly twenty six kilometers from Colchester and about fifty-one km from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
