The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set on the Chelmer and Can rivers, around thirty two miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of some 111,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortification in around AD 60, and the town that developed surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon settlement succeeded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was registered as Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it was being referred to by its current title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the main culprits were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a substantial industrial town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was struck a few times.

The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into serious decline during the nineteen-eighties, as much of its industries closed down, even so it continues to be a thriving and expanding town today, primarily due to its proximity to the city of london, and its outstanding road and rail communications.

The town can be found just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is some 26 kilometers driving distance from Colchester and about 51 km from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
