Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found on the Can and Chelmer rivers, approximately 32 miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has a population of approximately 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in around the first century AD, and the village that grew up in the locality of the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon camp followed the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it had become known by its present title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the inhabitants of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the main instigators were later put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved into a considerable manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, producing such products as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target of bombing in WW2, and it was successfully struck on a number of occasions.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled boats to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into serious decline in the 1980's, since a high percentage of its manufacturing plants went bust, yet it remains a thriving and developing town today, principally due to the closeness to the city of london, plus its first class rail and road links.

The town can be found near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's roughly 26 kilometers car journey from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
