River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the settlement which developed around the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon community succeeded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was registered as Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its current name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the citizens of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the instigators were ultimately put to death in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned into an important manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, crafting such items as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was hit many times.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs before (1797), when it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a lot of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it still is a thriving and expanding town today, primarily due to its closeness to the city of london, plus the good rail and road links.
