The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Can and Chelmer, a drive of around 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has a population of around 111,500 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortification in approximately the 1st century AD, and the town that evolved surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it had become known by its present identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the citizens of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading agitators were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent witnessed many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous assumed witches.

For several generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to a major industrial town during the nineteenth century, producing items such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target of bombing in WWII, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered substantial decline during the 1980's, mainly because a high percentage of its industry closed, though it remains a thriving and growing town today, mostly because of its proximity to London, and the quality rail and road links.

The town is situated beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is about 26 kilometers driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of London.
