Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fort in about the first century AD, and the community that expanded around the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon camp succeeded the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was registered as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it was being referred to by its current title of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century a number of the occupants of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the agitators were accordingly executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C witnessed lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a vital manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, producing such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing in WW2, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about 45 years earlier (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into a period of decline in the 1980's, simply because a high percentage of its industry shut down, however it remains a flourishing and expanding town today, primarily due to its close proximity to London, plus its quality road and rail links.
