Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found on the Chelmer and Can rivers, approximately 32 mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a population of some 111,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in roughly the 1st century AD, and the settlement which grew up around the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon community came after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 being called by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the citizens of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the main instigators were ultimately executed in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death countless alleged witches.

Through the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, making products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target for bombing in WW2, and it was hit on several occasions.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a period of decline during the 1980's, when much of its manufacturing plants went bust, though it is still a flourishing and blooming town today, predominantly because of its closeness to the city of london, and its first class road and rail links.

The town stands just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately 16 miles drive from Colchester and about 51 kms from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
