The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 mls from central London. The town has a population of approximately 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD, and the encampment that grew up in the area of the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon camp came after the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recorded as Celmeresfort, nonetheless one hundred years later it was being referred to by its present identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the people of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the leading instigators were later hung in the town after Richard II ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century saw more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved into a significant industrial town in the nineteenth century, crafting items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industry caused it to be a target of bombing in WW2, and it was struck a number of times.

The railway line arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about forty five years before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for vessels to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a period of decline during the 1980's, since much of its industry shut down, however it remains a successful and blooming town today, for the most part due to its closeness to the city of london, plus the quality road and rail connections.

The town is situated close to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's around twenty six km drive from Colchester and about 32 miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
