The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, around 32 mls from the heart of London. The town has a populace of some 111,500 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

A Saxon encampment followed the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was noted as Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it was being referred to by its current identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the residents of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the leading culprits were later executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed numerous suspected witches.

Over the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, making items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industry led to its being a target for bombing during WW2, and it was successfully hit a number of times.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly 45 years before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which allowed vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a period of decline in the 1980's, mainly because a lot of its industry closed down, though it is still a successful and blooming town today, predominantly due to its proximity to the capital, plus its excellent road and rail connections.
