The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of roughly 111,500 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in around AD 60, and the town which developed in the vicinity of the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community succeeded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it had taken on its current name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the locals of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the agitators were later put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th C saw even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many alleged witches.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th C, manufacturing such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, which allowed boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, since much of its industry ceased to be profitable, all the same it still is a flourishing and booming town today, mostly due to its nearness to the city of london, plus its good rail and road communications.

The town is situated close to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is about 16 miles from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
