A Saxon camp followed after the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 being called by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the inhabitants of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the instigators were accordingly hung in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

For many generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a major manufacturing town during the 19th C, producing such products as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was successfully hit a number of times.

The train arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a period of decline in the 1980's, simply because much of its manufacturing facilities went bust, though it is still a flourishing and expanding town today, largely because of its close proximity to the city of london, plus the good road and rail communications.
