A Saxon settlement followed the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 it was being referred to by its present identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the locals of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the ringleaders were subsequently hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent saw yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless supposed witches.

For many years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved in to a major manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, making such items as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing in WW2, and it was hit a number of times.

The railway line found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through substantial decline during the 1980's, when much of its industry shut down, though it continues to be a successful and expanding town today, for the most part due to its closeness to the city of london, plus the first rate road and rail communications.
