Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 miles from central London. The town boasts a populace of around 110,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

An Anglo Saxon settlement followed the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, however 100 years later being called by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the citizens of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the instigators were consequently put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century saw lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged many presumed witches.
