The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Can and Chelmer, about thirty two mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has got a populace of some 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in around the first century AD, and the town that grew up around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon camp superseded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had taken on its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the instigators were later hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death numerous presumed witches.

For several years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to a major manufacturing town during the 19th C, producing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The train found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five years before (1797), when it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through some decline in the nineteen-eighties, as a good deal of its manufacturing facilities went bust, though it is still a successful and expanding town today, mainly due to its nearness to the capital, plus its first rate road and rail links.

Chelmsford stands close to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately 16 miles drive from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
