The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated on the rivers Can and Chelmer, approximately thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford has got a population of around 111,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is an ancient town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortification in approximately AD 60, and the community which grew up in the vicinity of the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon camp followed the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its modern title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the occupants of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the instigators were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C witnessed many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death countless assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a major manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, crafting such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing during WWII, and it was hit a few times.

The train arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into serious decline in the 1980's, when a good deal of its factories closed down, though it still is a flourishing and developing town today, primarily because of its nearness to London, and its quality road and rail links.
