The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from central London. Chelmsford has got a populace of some 111,500 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the village that grew up surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment followed after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, though by1189 being called by its modern name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the residents of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the main instigators were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century witnessed more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a major industrial town during the 19th C, producing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The train arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into significant decline during the nineteen-eighties, as much of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it is still a successful and expanding town today, mostly because of its proximity to London, and its exceptional road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is set just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's some sixteen miles driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
