Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, about 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford has a populace of approximately 110,000 residents, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in roughly the 1st century AD, and the town that grew up in the vicinity of the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon settlement superseded the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, though by1189 it had taken on its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the locals of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the main agitators were subsequently put to death in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th C saw even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged countless supposed witches.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to an important manufacturing town in the 19th century, producing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing in WWII, and it was hit several times.

The train came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a time of decline in the 1980's, as a good deal of its industry ceased to be profitable, in spite of this it continues to be a flourishing and growing town today, largely due to its nearness to the capital, and the terrific road and rail communications.
