The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, about thirty two miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a population of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later the site of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the community which grew up around the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement came after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, though by1189 it had become known by its modern title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the people of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the instigators were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th C witnessed lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to an important industrial town in the nineteenth century, producing such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was struck a number of times.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly 45 years before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a good deal of its industry ceased to be profitable, in spite of this it is still a thriving and expanding town today, primarily because of its closeness to London, and its terrific rail and road communications.

Chelmsford lies just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is some 16 miles from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
