The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from central London. The town has a population of approximately 110,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later on the location of a Roman fort in approximately AD 60, and the town that developed in the vicinity of the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it had become known by its modern name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the locals of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the main agitators were subsequently hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned in to a major manufacturing town in the 19th century, making products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in World War 2, and it was hit many times.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline during the 1980's, mainly because much of its manufacturers closed, even so it still is a flourishing and growing town today, primarily due to the nearness to London, and its superb road and rail communications.

The town is positioned just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's about twenty six kilometers from Colchester and about 32 mls from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
