The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford has a populace of some 111,000 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is an age-old town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD, and the commune which evolved in the locality of the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon encampment succeeded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was registered as Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the residents of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the agitators were subsequently hung in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th C saw lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless assumed witches.
