The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands on the rivers Can and Chelmer, about thirty two miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of some 111,000 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in about the 1st century AD, and the town which evolved round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon community came after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, although by1189 being called by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the ringleaders were later hung in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed countless supposed witches.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a significant industrial town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing such goods as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing in WWII, and it was successfully struck a few times.

The train arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a lot of its industry shut down, even so it continues to be a successful and blooming town today, principally due to its closeness to the city of london, plus its superb road and rail links.

Chelmsford lies close to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is some 26 kilometres from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
