River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortification in approximately the first century AD, and the commune that grew up round the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon community came after the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, however by1189 it was being referred to by its present title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the residents of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the leading agitators were subsequently put to death in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th century witnessed many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless alleged witches.

Over the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a major manufacturing town in the 19th C, manufacturing such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industry led to its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was hit on several occasions.

The train arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into considerable decline in the 1980's, simply because a lot of its industry closed down, even so it continues to be a successful and booming town today, principally because of its nearness to the capital, plus its terrific road and rail links.
