Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from the city of London. The town has got a populace of some 110,000 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is an age-old town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD, and the village that evolved around the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement came after the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it had become known by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the locals of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the main culprits were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many presumed witches.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to an important manufacturing town during the 19th century, crafting products such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industry led to its being a target of bombing during WW2, and it was hit many times.

The railway line found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into a time of decline in the 1980's, because a high percentage of its production facilities closed, even so it is still a thriving and developing town today, mainly because of its closeness to London, plus the superb rail and road communications.

Chelmsford is located beside the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly 26 kilometers from Colchester and about 51 kilometres from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
