Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in roughly 60 AD, and the village which expanded round the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp followed the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was noted as Celmeresfort, however by1189 it had become known by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the citizens of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the leading culprits were subsequently executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century saw yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a major industrial town during the 19th C, manufacturing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during WW2, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years before (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into significant decline in the nineteen-eighties, since much of its industries closed down, though it continues to be a flourishing and expanding town today, mainly due to its proximity to the capital, and its quality rail and road communications.
