River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in around the first century AD, and the commune that expanded surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon settlement succeeded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recorded as Celmeresfort, nevertheless one hundred years later it was being referred to by its modern title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the people of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the main agitators were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th century witnessed many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, crafting such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was struck quite a few times.

The railway line arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which enabled craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, because much of its factories closed, though it continues to be a thriving and growing town today, for the most part due to its close proximity to the capital, and the first rate rail and road communications.
