A Saxon encampment superseded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it had taken on its present title of Chelmsford.

Its significance in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline in the 1980's, when a lot of its industry went bust, though it is still a thriving and expanding town today, principally due to the close proximity to the capital, and its outstanding road and rail connections.
