Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 mls from central London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of roughly 111,500 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in approximately the first century AD, and the encampment that grew up in the vicinity of the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless one hundred years later it had taken on its current name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the locals of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading culprits were later hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent witnessed even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous presumed witches.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a serious industrial town during the nineteenth century, making such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a time of decline in the 1980's, since a high percentage of its plants shut down, even so it is still a successful and blooming town today, largely due to its proximity to the capital, plus the good rail and road links.
