The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, about thirty two miles from the city of London. The town boasts a populace of around 111,000 residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is an age-old town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in around the first century AD, and the town that grew up round the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon encampment succeeded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 being called by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the people of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading instigators were ultimately put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent saw yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a considerable manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industry led to its being a target for bombing in WW2, and it was hit many times.

The train found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs before (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline during the 1980's, because a high percentage of its industry went bust, but it still is a thriving and growing town today, mainly due to its close proximity to the city of london, plus its first rate road and rail connections.
