River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the commune which grew up surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment followed after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless 100 years later it had become known by its modern name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the citizens of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the leading culprits were consequently hung in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved in to a vital industrial town in the 19th Cent, producing such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing during WW2, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway line arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into some decline in the 1980's, since much of its factories closed, but it is still a thriving and booming town today, principally due to the nearness to the city of london, and its first class rail and road connections.
