For many years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned into an important manufacturing town during the 19th century, making items such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industry led to its being a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The train arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around forty five years before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into a time of decline during the 1980's, as a good deal of its industry closed down, even so it is still a successful and blooming town today, primarily due to the close proximity to the capital, plus its exceptional rail and road communications.
