Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, roughly thirty two miles from the centre of London. The town boasts a population of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortress in roughly the first century AD, and the community that grew up surrounding the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had become known by its current title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the occupants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading culprits were later hung in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century witnessed lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged numerous suspected witches.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a major manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, producing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industry led to its being a target for bombing in WW2, and it was successfully struck several times.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a high percentage of its industry went bust, even so it continues to be a flourishing and booming town today, mostly due to its nearness to London, plus its superb road and rail links.

The town lies adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's around twenty six kilometres from Colchester and about 51 kilometres from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
