Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, about 32 miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a population of about one hundred and eleven thousand residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in roughly AD 60, and the village that grew up surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon camp came after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it had taken on its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the occupants of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the main culprits were subsequently executed in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century witnessed more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death numerous presumed witches.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to a vital manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, making goods such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industry led to its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was hit a few times.

The railway line arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately 45 years before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging watercraft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into some decline in the 1980's, since a high percentage of its industry closed down, even so it still is a thriving and expanding town today, principally due to its proximity to the city of london, and its first class road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is found close to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is around twenty six kilometers drive from Colchester and about 51 kms from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
