Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of some 111,500 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD, and the encampment that evolved around the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon camp superseded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was listed as Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it had become known by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the residents of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the main instigators were ultimately put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death countless supposed witches.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, producing such products as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was successfully struck many times.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about 45 years before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a high percentage of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it is still a thriving and blooming town today, mainly due to its proximity to the city of london, and the first rate rail and road communications.

The town lies close to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is some 16 mls car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometres from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
