Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, a driving distance of roughly thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford boasts a population of around one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in approximately the first century AD, and the commune that grew up round the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon settlement superseded the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it had taken on its modern identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the residents of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the main instigators were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many alleged witches.

For several years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed in to a vital industrial town in the 19th Cent, crafting such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was struck many times.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around forty five yrs before (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into a period of decline in the 1980's, since much of its industry shut down, all the same it still is a successful and developing town today, principally due to its nearness to London, and its good road and rail links.

The town is found adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately 16 mls from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
