Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits on the rivers Can and Chelmer, a drive of some thirty two mls from the heart of London. The town has got a populace of about 111,000 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD, and the community that grew up round the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon camp followed the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it was being referred to by its modern title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the inhabitants of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the instigators were subsequently put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Through the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a major manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was hit several times.

The railway came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a high percentage of its plants closed, even so it still is a flourishing and developing town today, mainly due to the closeness to the city of london, plus the exceptional road and rail communications.

The town can be found adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's around sixteen miles drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
