Chelmsford is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD, and the town that evolved in the area of the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon encampment succeeded the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless by1189 it had become known by its present identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the people of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading instigators were later hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent witnessed yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th C, crafting such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing during WW2, and it was successfully hit quite a few times.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into a time of decline during the 1980's, mainly because a lot of its industry shut down, though it remains a flourishing and blooming town today, primarily due to its closeness to the capital, and its exceptional road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is found close to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's about twenty six km drive from Colchester and about fifty-one km from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
