Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford boasts a population of roughly 111,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fort in roughly 60 AD, and the town that expanded around the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon camp followed the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recognized as Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it had become known by its modern title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the locals of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the main instigators were thereafter hung in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century witnessed lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged countless supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into an important manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, producing items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industry led to its being a target for bombing in WW2, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about forty five years earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a period of decline in the 1980's, because a high percentage of its industry closed, even so it is still a successful and growing town today, mainly due to the close proximity to London, and its excellent road and rail links.

Chelmsford is located close to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately 16 miles car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
