The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated on the Can and Chelmer rivers, about 32 miles from the centre of London. The town boasts a population of some 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the village which grew up surrounding the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community followed after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it had become known by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the leading agitators were consequently hung in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed numerous suspected witches.

For several years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial industrial town in the 19th C, making such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was successfully struck many times.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about 45 years earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into a period of decline during the 1980's, because a lot of its manufacturing facilities closed down, even so it remains a thriving and developing town today, mostly due to its proximity to London, and the outstanding rail and road communications.

Chelmsford is positioned adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly 26 kilometers drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometres from the centre of London.
