The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Chelmer and Can, a driving distance of about thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford boasts a population of roughly 111,000 residents, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the village that expanded surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment came after the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 being called by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the citizens of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading agitators were subsequently hung in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into an important industrial town in the 19th century, crafting items such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was hit many times.

The railway line arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around 45 years before (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a time of decline during the 1980's, mainly because a high percentage of its industries shut down, in spite of this it still is a successful and booming town today, predominantly due to its proximity to the capital, plus the quality road and rail links.

Chelmsford can be found close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately 16 miles driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of the capital.
