Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, roughly thirty two miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the village which expanded surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its current title of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the occupants of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading culprits were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed numerous assumed witches.

For several generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved in to a major manufacturing town in the 19th C, making items such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industry led to its being a target for bombing in WWII, and it was struck a number of times.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into a period of decline in the 1980's, since a good deal of its manufacturing facilities went bust, even so it continues to be a thriving and expanding town today, principally due to its closeness to the capital, and its first class road and rail communications.

The town is situated adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly twenty six km from Colchester and about 51 kilometers from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
