Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in approximately the 1st century AD, and the town that grew up surrounding the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon community succeeded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was listed as Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its modern title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the citizens of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the instigators were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into an important manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in WW2, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into considerable decline in the 1980's, when much of its factories went bust, though it is still a flourishing and growing town today, for the most part due to the closeness to the capital, plus its superb road and rail communications.

The town is found close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is about sixteen miles car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
