The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned on the Chelmer and Can rivers, around thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford boasts a population of around one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortress in around AD 60, and the settlement which developed surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon settlement succeeded the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it had taken on its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the instigators were consequently executed in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death many presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a major manufacturing town in the 19th C, manufacturing items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industry caused it to be a target of bombing during WWII, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The railway arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly 45 years earlier (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a high percentage of its industry shut down, even so it remains a successful and developing town today, principally because of its proximity to London, and its outstanding rail and road connections.

Chelmsford is found near the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's around 16 mls from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
