Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of about 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in about AD 60, and the village that developed around the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp followed the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless 100 years later it had taken on its present name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the occupants of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the instigators were thereafter hung in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed countless assumed witches.

Across the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing products such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The railway arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately 45 years earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline during the 1980's, as a good deal of its industry closed, though it remains a successful and expanding town today, predominantly due to the nearness to London, plus its terrific rail and road connections.
