The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has a population of roughly 111,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is an age-old town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in around the 1st century AD, and the village that developed round the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community followed after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it was being referred to by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the citizens of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the ringleaders were later executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century witnessed more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous supposed witches.

Through the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town in the 19th C, manufacturing goods such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target for bombing during WWII, and it was struck quite a few times.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), when it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into serious decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a lot of its industry went bust, even so it remains a flourishing and developing town today, primarily due to the close proximity to the city of london, and the exceptional road and rail connections.

The town can be found just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's around sixteen miles from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
