The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, a car journey of roughly thirty two miles from the centre of London. The town has a populace of around 111,000 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fort in around AD 60, and the settlement which developed surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed after the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the occupants of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the ringleaders were accordingly executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent saw even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged many alleged witches.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town in the 19th century, manufacturing products such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in World War 2, and it was successfully struck quite a few times.

The railway line arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into some decline during the 1980's, since a high percentage of its industry went bust, though it continues to be a flourishing and booming town today, mostly due to its proximity to London, and the good rail and road communications.

Chelmsford is found adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is about twenty six km drive from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
