Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has got a population of about 111,500 occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in approximately AD 60, and the town which developed surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, nevertheless 100 years later it had become known by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the locals of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the ringleaders were later hung in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous supposed witches.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town in the 19th century, manufacturing such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was successfully hit many times.

The railway found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, as a high percentage of its industries ceased to be profitable, though it is still a flourishing and blooming town today, largely because of its nearness to the city of london, plus its first class road and rail communications.

The town stands just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly twenty six km from Colchester and about 51 kilometres from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
