Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th century, manufacturing items such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was struck quite a few times.

The railway line came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years earlier (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which allowed boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a time of decline in the 1980's, since a good deal of its manufacturing plants closed, though it continues to be a flourishing and growing town today, for the most part due to the closeness to the city of london, and the exceptional road and rail links.
