Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford has a population of about 111,000 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortification in roughly 60 AD, and the encampment which evolved surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment followed after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it was being referred to by its modern name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the locals of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading instigators were ultimately put to death in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important industrial town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing goods such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a target of bombing during the Second World War, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into serious decline in the 1980's, because a lot of its industry closed, though it still is a thriving and blooming town today, mainly due to the proximity to the capital, plus its first class rail and road links.

The town is found just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's around sixteen mls car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
