The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two miles from the city of London. The town boasts a populace of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in about AD 60, and the commune which grew up round the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community came after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it had taken on its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the inhabitants of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the leading agitators were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th century witnessed many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a significant manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, producing such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industry caused it to be a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was successfully struck a number of times.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a good deal of its industry went bust, even so it still is a successful and blooming town today, primarily because of its closeness to the capital, plus the excellent rail and road links.

The town is set just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is around 26 km car journey from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
