Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford has a populace of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortress in about AD 60, and the commune which expanded in the area of the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon camp followed after the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was listed as Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its current title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the leading agitators were later hung in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became an important industrial town in the 19th century, producing products such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during WW2, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into some decline in the 1980's, when much of its industry closed down, yet it is still a successful and expanding town today, principally because of its close proximity to the capital, and its first class rail and road communications.
