Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two miles from central London. The town has a populace of around 111,000 occupants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD, and the village that evolved in the area of the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon camp followed the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it had taken on its present-day name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the inhabitants of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the main agitators were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th C witnessed yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous presumed witches.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a substantial industrial town during the 19th C, making products such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was struck many times.

The train arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, which allowed watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, because much of its industry went bust, yet it is still a thriving and developing town today, mostly because of its nearness to London, plus the first rate rail and road communications.
