Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, a drive of approximately 32 mls from the heart of London. The town boasts a population of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the encampment that developed in the locality of the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement followed after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its current name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the occupants of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the agitators were accordingly put to death in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent saw yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major industrial town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industry caused it to be a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into some decline during the 1980's, since a high percentage of its industry closed, even so it is still a thriving and developing town today, mainly due to its closeness to the city of london, plus the exceptional rail and road communications.

The town is situated beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly twenty six km from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
