Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has a population of roughly 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later the location of a Roman fort in about the first century AD, and the village which grew up round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon settlement superseded the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it had become known by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the people of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the main instigators were consequently executed in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important industrial town during the nineteenth century, producing items such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The railway arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into substantial decline in the 1980's, when much of its industry closed, though it is still a thriving and blooming town today, for the most part due to the proximity to the capital, and its good road and rail links.
