The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of about 110,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the encampment that evolved around the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it had become known by its present name of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the ringleaders were ultimately put to death in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century saw more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death many presumed witches.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a considerable industrial town in the 19th century, manufacturing such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industry led to its being a target for bombing in WWII, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for boats to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, since a high percentage of its manufacturing plants went bust, though it is still a flourishing and blooming town today, primarily because of its proximity to London, plus its outstanding road and rail communications.

Chelmsford sits near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is about twenty six km drive from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
