The railway line found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered considerable decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a good deal of its factories ceased to be profitable, though it continues to be a flourishing and growing town today, mostly due to its nearness to the capital, plus the terrific road and rail links.
