The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from the heart of London. The town has got a populace of about 111,000 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later on the site of a Roman fort in about the first century AD, and the community that developed surrounding the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon encampment came after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it had taken on its modern identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the citizens of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the main culprits were consequently hung in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous alleged witches.

Across the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed in to a major manufacturing town in the 19th century, manufacturing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industry caused it to be a target of bombing during the Second World War, and it was struck several times.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly 45 years before (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into some decline during the 1980's, mainly because a lot of its industry closed, though it is still a thriving and booming town today, primarily due to the closeness to the city of london, and the superb rail and road links.

The town can be found just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly 26 km driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometers from the centre of the capital.
