The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two miles from central London. The town has got a populace of approximately 110,000 people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

A Saxon camp came after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recognized as Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it had become known by its current name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the citizens of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the ringleaders were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C witnessed yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged many supposed witches.
