Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford has a population of approximately 110,000 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortification in around AD 60, and the commune that grew up surrounding the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp followed after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it had become known by its present title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the citizens of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the agitators were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th century witnessed lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous supposed witches.

Throughout the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important industrial town in the 19th century, making goods such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target of bombing during WWII, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline in the 1980's, when a lot of its industry closed, though it is still a flourishing and blooming town today, primarily due to the nearness to the capital, and its superb road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is situated adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's about sixteen miles car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
