Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a populace of approximately 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

A Saxon camp succeeded the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it was being referred to by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the locals of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the main culprits were subsequently hung in the town after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th century saw yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death countless supposed witches.

For many centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th C, producing products such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was hit many times.
