The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, a driving distance of approximately 32 mls from the city of London. The town has a population of about 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD, and the community which developed surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon settlement followed after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it had become known by its modern title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the occupants of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the leading instigators were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Through the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to a significant industrial town in the 19th century, manufacturing such products as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was hit on several occasions.

The railway line arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, since a high percentage of its production facilities went bust, even so it still is a flourishing and growing town today, predominantly due to its proximity to the city of london, plus its excellent rail and road communications.

Chelmsford is found beside the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately twenty six kilometres car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
