The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from the centre of London. The town has got a populace of around 110,000 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in about the 1st century AD, and the encampment that grew up round the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement superseded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was registered as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later being called by its modern name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the inhabitants of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the main instigators were later hung in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous presumed witches.

Through the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into an important manufacturing town in the 19th century, producing such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway line came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly forty five years earlier (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because much of its industries closed, even so it continues to be a successful and growing town today, predominantly because of its closeness to the capital, plus the first class road and rail links.

Chelmsford is found just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is about sixteen mls from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
