River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in around AD 60, and the town which grew up round the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community followed the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it had become known by its current title of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the people of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the leading culprits were thereafter executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century saw yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous suspected witches.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a major industrial town during the nineteenth century, crafting such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was struck several times.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly 45 years before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a high percentage of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it is still a thriving and blooming town today, predominantly because of its proximity to the capital, and the first class road and rail links.
