The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, around thirty two miles from the heart of London. The town has got a population of some 111,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the community which grew up around the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community came after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it had taken on its current title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the occupants of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading culprits were thereafter hung in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed numerous alleged witches.

For several years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town in the 19th century, making such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was struck on several occasions.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline in the 1980's, because a lot of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it continues to be a thriving and blooming town today, mostly due to its closeness to the capital, plus its quality rail and road connections.

The town lies close to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is some twenty six km car journey from Colchester and about 51 kms from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
