Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has a populace of some 110,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD, and the commune which grew up surrounding the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon camp came after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was registered as Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its current title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the people of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading instigators were thereafter put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a serious manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing such goods as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industry led to its being a target of bombing during WWII, and it was struck several times.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into some decline during the 1980's, mainly because a high percentage of its industries closed down, though it remains a flourishing and developing town today, primarily due to its close proximity to the capital, and its exceptional road and rail links.

The town is positioned near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately 26 km car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one km from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
