Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located on the Can and Chelmer rivers, a driving distance of approximately thirty two mls from the city of London. The town has a populace of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD, and the settlement that expanded round the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment superseded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it had taken on its current name of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the residents of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the agitators were consequently put to death in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent witnessed even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town in the nineteenth century, crafting products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a lot of its manufacturing facilities closed, though it remains a successful and blooming town today, mainly due to its nearness to London, and the superb rail and road links.

The town stands close to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's around 26 km driving distance from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
