Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a serious manufacturing town in the 19th century, producing such products as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was struck several times.

The train came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about forty five years before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into some decline in the 1980's, when a high percentage of its industry closed, yet it still is a thriving and growing town today, primarily because of its nearness to London, and its quality road and rail communications.
