Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of around one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is an age-old town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in approximately the 1st century AD, and the commune which grew up around the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon community came after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had taken on its present title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the people of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the leading culprits were thereafter executed in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Through the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial industrial town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industry led to its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was struck many times.

The railway line came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a period of decline during the 1980's, when much of its industrial facilities shut down, even so it remains a successful and booming town today, mainly due to the closeness to London, plus the quality road and rail links.

The town is located beside the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is about 16 miles from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
