Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located on the rivers Chelmer and Can, roughly 32 miles from the centre of London. The town boasts a population of about 110,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later on the site of a Roman fort in approximately the 1st century AD, and the community that evolved surrounding the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon community followed after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was listed as Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it had taken on its modern name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the instigators were thereafter put to death in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to a serious manufacturing town during the 19th century, producing such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in World War 2, and it was hit quite a few times.

The railway line arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years earlier (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into some decline during the 1980's, because a lot of its industry closed down, yet it is still a flourishing and growing town today, primarily because of its closeness to the capital, plus the first rate road and rail connections.

The town is located just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's some twenty six km from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
