Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in around the 1st century AD, and the encampment which grew up surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement succeeded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless 100 years later it was being referred to by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the locals of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the instigators were subsequently hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century witnessed more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a major manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, crafting items such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial engineering led to its being a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was struck quite a few times.

The train came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because much of its plants shut down, even so it is still a thriving and blooming town today, largely due to its nearness to the city of london, plus its exceptional rail and road communications.

Chelmsford sits close to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly 26 kilometres car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
