The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands on the Chelmer and Can rivers, about thirty two mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a populace of roughly 110,000 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortification in roughly AD 60, and the settlement which evolved in the vicinity of the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp came after the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recognized as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it was being referred to by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the residents of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the instigators were consequently hung in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous presumed witches.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to an important industrial town in the 19th C, producing such products as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a target for bombing during WW2, and it was hit quite a few times.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through substantial decline in the nineteen-eighties, because a high percentage of its manufacturing facilities ceased to be profitable, even so it still is a thriving and booming town today, for the most part due to the closeness to the city of london, plus its quality road and rail communications.

The town can be found adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly 16 miles from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
