Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, roughly thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford boasts a population of about 111,500 residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortification in around the 1st century AD, and the settlement that developed round the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon settlement followed the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it had become known by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the locals of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the agitators were ultimately executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous presumed witches.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing in WW2, and it was hit quite a few times.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because much of its industry closed down, though it is still a thriving and expanding town today, primarily due to the nearness to London, plus the first rate road and rail connections.

Chelmsford stands beside the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is about sixteen mls drive from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
