The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a population of around 111,500 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the encampment that expanded surrounding the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement succeeded the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, though by1189 it was being referred to by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the people of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the ringleaders were subsequently hung in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century witnessed yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many assumed witches.

Through the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into an important manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, making items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing in WWII, and it was successfully struck a number of times.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered considerable decline in the nineteen-eighties, as a high percentage of its industry went bust, though it still is a successful and blooming town today, predominantly because of its nearness to the capital, plus the superb rail and road links.

Chelmsford lies beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is about 26 kilometers drive from Colchester and about 32 mls from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
