Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two miles from the heart of London. The town has got a population of roughly 111,000 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later the site of a Roman fortification in around AD 60, and the commune that developed surrounding the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement followed the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its present identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the occupants of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the leading culprits were later hung in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged many alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Through the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into an important industrial town during the 19th century, manufacturing such goods as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a good deal of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it still is a successful and developing town today, mainly due to its close proximity to London, and its exceptional rail and road communications.

The town is situated near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is about 26 kilometers from Colchester and about 51 kilometres from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
