An Anglo Saxon encampment followed after the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it had become known by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the residents of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the leading agitators were subsequently executed in the town after Richard II ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century saw lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death numerous alleged witches.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a major manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, making goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target of bombing during WW2, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The train came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a period of decline in the 1980's, simply because a lot of its production facilities ceased to be profitable, though it is still a successful and booming town today, largely because of its proximity to the capital, and the terrific rail and road links.

The town is set near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is some sixteen miles drive from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
