Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 miles from central London. The town has a populace of about one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is an age-old town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in approximately the 1st century AD, and the encampment which grew up in the vicinity of the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon community followed the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later being called by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the inhabitants of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the agitators were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a substantial manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, producing such products as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing in WWII, and it was hit a number of times.

The railway line came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a period of decline in the 1980's, when a lot of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it continues to be a thriving and blooming town today, predominantly because of its close proximity to the city of london, and its first class rail and road communications.

The town is set beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's some 26 kilometres car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
