Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, a drive of some thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford has got a population of roughly 110,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortress in around AD 60, and the settlement that grew up in the area of the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it had taken on its modern name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the occupants of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the main agitators were subsequently executed in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th century witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous suspected witches.

For several generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, crafting such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in WWII, and it was struck many times.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, as much of its manufacturing facilities shut down, although it is still a flourishing and booming town today, predominantly due to the close proximity to London, and its exceptional road and rail connections.

The town is positioned just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is around sixteen mls drive from Colchester and about 51 kms from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
