Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, a driving distance of approximately 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of about 111,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is an ancient town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the town which developed around the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 being called by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the inhabitants of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the ringleaders were accordingly executed in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged countless assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a considerable manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, crafting such goods as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The railway arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a period of decline in the 1980's, mainly because much of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it continues to be a successful and booming town today, predominantly because of its closeness to the city of london, and its exceptional rail and road communications.

The town sits beside the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately twenty six km from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
