The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two miles from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of roughly 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the encampment which grew up round the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment succeeded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was described as Celmeresfort, however by1189 it was being referred to by its present title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the locals of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the instigators were later hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th century witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, producing such items as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing in WWII, and it was struck a few times.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging vessels to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered significant decline during the nineteen-eighties, as a good deal of its manufacturing facilities shut down, though it is still a thriving and expanding town today, primarily because of its nearness to London, plus its terrific road and rail communications.

Chelmsford lies beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately 26 km from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
